MCA subjects and syllabus
Master of Computer Applications · 2 years · GNDU and IKGPTU
MCA is where the computing subjects stop skimming. The papers overlap with BCA by name — databases, networks, operating systems — and go several levels further: query optimisation instead of SQL syntax, distributed systems instead of client-server diagrams, machine learning and cloud computing as full papers rather than as a final-unit mention.
The other difference is the dissertation. A BCA project is usually three months and a working application. An MCA dissertation is expected to have a question behind it, and the students who treat it as a bigger version of the BCA project are the ones who struggle in the viva.
Most people here take MCA for one of two reasons: to convert a non-computer graduation into a computing career, or to clear the postgraduate filter on job and teaching applications. Both are good reasons, and they call for different choices in the electives.

We teach this
You can do your regular MCA study with us
Plenty of our students are doing a MCA at a college under GNDU or IKGPTU and come here for the computer subjects alongside it — not instead of college, and not only when a backlog has already happened. We work through the papers on your own scheme, in the order your semester needs them.
What that means in practice: the whole syllabus gets covered rather than the parts that make a good demo, you write code on a machine instead of copying it into a file, and the lab work gets done here rather than the night before submission.
What we will not say is that this guarantees you marks or a job. We do not run placements and we do not promise results. Come and sit in a class, decide for yourself.
The papers we have written up
Each one has the syllabus unit by unit, the questions that repeat, the mistakes that cost marks, and lab programs that run.
Data Structures
The paper that decides whether you can clear a technical interview. Also the one most people carry as a backlog.
OpenDBMS
Half theory you will forget and half SQL you will use every working day. Know which half you are revising.
OpenOperating Systems
Almost entirely numerical. Six or seven algorithms, each worth full marks if you can draw its diagram correctly.
OpenJava
The object-oriented paper. Learn the four principles properly and three later papers stop being difficult.
OpenWhat else is in the scheme
Listed so the picture is honest rather than only the parts we have pages for. We have not written these up yet.
- •Advanced Data Structures and Algorithm Analysis
- •Advanced Database Management Systems

- •Cloud Computing and Big Data
- •Computer Graphics
- •Dissertation and industry internship
Check your own scheme before you plan anything
We deliberately do not print semester numbers. Schemes are revised, colleges teach several batches at once, and GNDU’s own current BCA document leaves later semesters to be published separately. Your department’s copy for your batch year is the only one that counts.
Where we come into it
We are not your college and we do not run your syllabus. These are the three things MCA students actually come to us for.
Dissertation and internship work
A project with a question behind it rather than another CRUD application, built to a standard that survives a viva. We will also tell you when an idea is too large for the time you have.

Machine learning and cloud appear in the syllabus as chapters. If you want them as skills, our data science and local LLM tracks go where the paper stops.
Read moreFull stack, for the roles that actually hire
The gap between an MCA syllabus and a backend job description is Spring Boot, a database under load, and a deployment. That gap is a few months of work, and it is what we teach.
Read moreQuestions MCA students ask
Is MCA worth doing after BCA?
It depends on what is blocking you. If you cannot get interviews because applications are filtered on a postgraduate degree, or you want a teaching or government route, yes. If you can already build software and the interviews are going badly on technical grounds, two more years of syllabus will not fix that and a few months of real projects might.
Can I do MCA with a BSc or BCom background?
Yes at most universities, usually with mathematics at plus-two or graduation level, and the first semester includes bridge papers. Be realistic about the first six months: you will be learning to program alongside people who have done it for three years. It is doable and it is not gentle.
What should I pick for my MCA dissertation?
Something small enough to finish and specific enough to defend. The failure pattern we see is a student announcing a machine learning system for something enormous, building a demo, and being unable to answer why one model was chosen over another. A narrower project you understand completely beats a wide one you half-built.
